Did you know that special interests and the city of San Diego are working quietly behind the scenes to bring paid on-street parking to our local communities, including La Jolla?
Despite overwhelming opposition from residents, small business owners, visitors, and consumers alike, the City is working with a small secretive group that includes large restaurant owners and proprietors of paid parking lots to tap into your change purse. Don't be fooled!
- This isn't about finding a more convenient way to pay.
- This isn't about finding "easier-to-enforce" technology.
- This is about keeping the "camel's nose out from under the tent"!!!
If we allow even a single meter on our public streets as part of the proposed "Pilot Parking Plan" more will soon follow.
The Parking Advisory Board needs to be disbanded because it continues to ignore its charter! It promotes paid on-street parking as a panacea while refusing to actually study the "parking problem."
PLJ Bows to Public PressureOn April 9, 2008 Promote La Jolla (PLJ) held it's regular monthly Board meeting where the Board voted to approve this motion: "To support the findings and recommendations of the Parking Advisory Board based on the specifics of the Pilot Program passed in September 2007." Many have long suspected that Promote La Jolla would vote to send the Pilot Plan to the City Council, without any changes, adjustments or modifications. Most importantly, the prediction was that the "Pilot Plan", calling for paid on-street parking throughout La Jolla, would not be altered due to public comment. This is exactly what happened! Promote La Jolla endorsed this proposal for paid on-street parking in La Jolla, despite the fact that 90% of business members that they "represent" are in opposition, not to mention the vast majority of La Jolla's residents and visitors. To our surprise, no doubt in response to increased public pressure—and the efforts of NoPaidParking.Org and its many supporters, the Promote La Jolla Board unanimously approved a motion to recind its previous motion recommending paid on-street parking in La jolla to the City Council. This happened during the Board's regularly scheduled May 14, 2008 meeting The PLJ Board did not replace this recinded motion with any other action. This means that PLJ has simply withdrawn its April 9th action approving the November 2007 "Pilot Parking Plan" (calling for paid on-street parking in La Jolla) and sending the research and work of the La Jolla Community Parking Disctrict Advisory Board to the City of San Diego. No official announcement about the status of the La Jolla Community Parking District Advisory Board itself was made at the meeting. The Parking Advisory Board is still in existance—which means that it can take action at any time. The same pro-paid-parking people are in leadership positions—nothing has changed in that regard. Both the La Jolla Community Planning Association and the La Jolla Town Council have withdrawn their appointments to the Parking District AdvisoryBoard—Promote La Jolla has not. We will continue to monitor the situation and watch for any/all final actions that signal an end to the issue of paid on-street parking in La Jolla. |
